Forum: GratefulDead Subject: we can run

Lately I have thrown in many gigs where this tune has appeared. I used to have this song on my "not-so-bad/ok" brent tune list but after further review, it's a clinker. Don't know how I missed this one. Lyrically it's very preachy, musically in the multiple versions I heard the band is off in it's tempo and Vocally they are out of key most times. This is not a shot at the man on the keys, especially since I'm in the minority on Don't Need Love but
man I was wrong on this tune.

i hear ya man. hence, i have decided to replace that tune in my head with this crowd pleaser:

there was a hole

in the middle of the ground

the prettiest hole

that you ever did see

and the hole in the ground

and the green grass grows all around all around

and the green grass grows all around

and in this hole

there was a tree

the prettiest tree

that you ever did see

and the tree in the hole

and the hole in the ground

and the green grass grows all around all around

and the green grass grows all around

and on this tree

there was a branch

the prettiest branch

that you ever did see

and the branch on the tre

and the tree in the hole

and the hole in the ground

and the green grass grows all around all around

and the green grass grows all around

and on this branch

there was a nest

the prettiest nest

that you ever did see

and the nest on the branch

and the branch on the tree

and the tree in the hole

and the hole in the ground

and the green grass grows all around all around

and the green grrass grows all around

and in this nest

there was an egg

the prettiest egg

that you ever did see

and the egg in the nest

and the nest on the branch

and the branch on the tree

and the tree in the hole

and the hole in the ground

and the green grass grows all around all around

and the green grrass grows all around

and in this egg

there was a bird

the prettiest bird

that you ever did see

and the bird in the egg

and the egg in the nest

and the nest on the branch

and the branch on the tree

and the tree in the hole

and the hole in the ground

and the green grass grows all around all around

and the green grrass grows all around

Admit it - the chorus will haunt you for the next few days:

Goodbye to you my trusted friend
We've known each other since we were nine or ten
Together we climbed hills and trees
Learned of love and A B C's
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.

Goodbye my friend it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I'll be there

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed were just seasons
Out of time......

Goodbye Papa please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to teach me right from wrong
Too much wine and too much song
Wonder how I got along.

Goodbye Papa its hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Little children everywhere
When you see them I'll be there.

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the seasons
Have all gone.

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the seasons
Have all gone.

Goodbye Michelle my little one
You gave me love and helped me find the sun
And every time that I was down
You would always come around
And get my feet back on the ground.

Goodbye Michelle it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
With the flowers everywhere
I wish that we could both be there

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach
Were just starfish on the beach

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach
Were just starfish on the beach

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the seasons
Have all gone

All our lives we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed were just seasons
Out of time......

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun

i have to say, i ALWAYS skip over this tune. just never did anything for me. and i think your assessment of the lyrics is the major problem for me. glad to hear someone else feels the same way (even though i probably hate it more - lol)

love the man too - my favorite GD keyman

Yeah, the "save the earth, whilst I destroy my body" hypocrisy never made it for me either.

You can run, but you can't hide from Heroin.....fuck the litter and air pollution. Shirley, you can see, the body is a Temple.:)Roy Rogers.

As much as I too loved Brent, I can't think of a single song of his that I ever looked forward to hearing...

One thing I forgot earlier... Good morning/afternoon to all!
